Hello friends,
I am sharing this week’s devotional a little early from Birmingham, England. We are in Week 3 of Biblical Wisdom for Flourishing, and our focus is on one of the most practical and spiritual questions you can ask:
How do I set goals that truly align with God’s plan for my life?
Whether you are thinking about your career, your family, or your daily routine, goal-setting is always about discernment. There is nothing “ambitious” about goal setting. The good news is that God is not silent about your plans. He invites you to bring them into relationship with His will.
Our Scripture for this week is Proverbs 16:3:
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”
The word “commit” in Hebrew means to roll something fully onto another. The picture is of placing the full weight of your intentions on God. The promise is not that God will simply approve your ideas, but that He will shape them into the right ones. Flourishing comes through consecrated planning, where our desires are formed by His desires and our actions are guided by wisdom and love.
Psychology supports this truth. Research in self-concordance theory shows that people flourish when their goals fit with their values.
When we pursue goals that are aligned with what matters most to us, we feel more peace and less inner conflict.
Kennon Sheldon’s work on self-concordant goals shows that these kinds of goals also help us persist through challenges and feel more satisfied with life. In other words, when our goals are aligned with God’s will and with the values He has planted in us, they carry strength and resilience.
We see this lived out in Nehemiah’s story. When Nehemiah heard of Jerusalem’s broken walls, he did not rush into action. He first prayed and fasted. He sought God’s guidance before making his plans. When the right time came, he had a clear vision to share with the king because he had already surrendered it to God. His example gives us a model for spiritual goal-setting: listen to the burden on your heart, seek God’s wisdom, plan carefully, and then act with courage.
Here is a simple framework to help you flourish as you set goals:
Discern: Begin in prayer and ask, “What is God stirring in me?”
Define: Write your goals clearly but hold them loosely.
Dedicate: Offer them back to God and invite His refinement.
Do: Take faithful action, trusting God with the outcome.
You can put this into practice by starting a goal journal. Write down what you are working toward, and add a short prayer beside each goal. Review your plans with God each week, not just with your calendar. Ask yourself if your goals reflect God’s character and if they serve others. Celebrate the small wins that show alignment and don’t always focus on success.
Take a moment to reflect: What goals are you pursuing right now? Have you truly brought them before God? Which ones feel aligned with your deeper calling, and which ones may need to be revised or released? What is one step you can take this week to move forward in faith?
